English 2013: Technical Assistance

Required Hardware

  • A Macintosh computer running System 9.0 or higher or a PC running Windows 98 or higher.
  • A modem or direct Internet connection

Required Software

  • a java-enabled browser capable of sending e-mail.
  • a word processing program. I strongly recommend Microsoft Word. Documents created in Word translate well to my office Macintosh. I have, however, been able to work with students using other packages. Check with me if you will be unable to use Word for your documents.

Optional Software

  • a dedicated email program. Outlook Express works well and can be downloaded free with the latest version of Internet Explorer.

Using Attachments

  • Many online instructors use the Digital Dropbox in Blackboard, but I prefer you submit your questions reponses, essays, and examinations as attachments to email messages sent directly to me.

Using Email

  • You will use email to communicate with me and to submit the work in the course (See "Using Attachments" above). Be sure to put the course number "2013" in the subject line of any e-mail that you send me. That way my email program will automatically place your message in the appropriate class folder and send you an automated response so you will know that I have received your message. I will send messages to your Tech student account, but you can set your Tech account to automatically forward mail to another account that you check regularly. After logging onto the tech online mail service, select "Change My Forwarding Info" from the "Account Options" pull-down menu and enter the address to which you want all of your mail forwarded
